Performers Announced for the LA Kush Stage at the 2016 Medical Cannabis Cup—A Live Cannabis Experience

Mel Frank to Receive HIGH TIMES Dr. Lester Grinspoon Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to Cannabis Freedom

Mel Frank is the pen name of James J. Goodwin, born in Massachusetts in 1944. Goodwin served as a shipboard electronics technician in the U.S. Navy from 1963-1967. Upon completion of service, he moved to New York City, where he began growing marijuana in 1968.

After writing a cannabis cultivation article for Rolling Stone magazine in 1971, he co-authored the 1974 publication of the Marijuana Growers' Indoor/Outdoor Guide. Three years later, in 1977, he co-authored and photographed the groundbreaking Marijuana Grower's Guide Deluxe. The Deluxe brought the reality of home growing into public awareness and spurred widespread interest in personal marijuana production. Several generations later, growing techniques are far more sophisticated, but the current understanding, terminology and general strategies for growing—such as stages of growth, photoperiod manipulation, pre-flowering, cloning and rejuvenation—were first described in the Deluxe.

When HIGH TIMES magazine began in 1974, Frank was the first to answer readers' questions, and he followed by contributing dozens of photographs and articles that helped establish HIGH TIMES as the leading resource magazine for growers. He's the longest continuous contributing writer/photographer for HIGH TIMES magazine, and the information and photos he has shared over the years have had a profound and lasting impact on cannabis culture. In 1977, at government request, he donated nine diverse landraces with seeds and samples to the U.S. government marijuana research program at its facility at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. He also donated two varieties he developed, Afghani #1 and Durban Poison, which, along with Haze, Hindu Kush and Skunk #1 from other California breeders, became the basis for the commercial seed industry in Amsterdam.

In 1988, Frank founded Red Eye Press and their first publication was Frank's Marijuana Grower's Insider's Guide. He updated the Deluxe in 1990 and again in 1997. The Deluxe and Insider have sold over a million copies combined and have been translated into several languages. Frank also wrote the Introduction for Robert Connell Clarke's Marijuana Botany, published in 1981 and, while Frank was judging at the 1996 HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, Clarke offered his manuscript on hashish. Frank edited, contributed photographs and published Clarke's seminal tome HASHISH! in 1998, changing the face of marijuana concentrate science and production.

Mel Frank's many contributions to cannabis and concentrate production technology as a journalist, grower, breeder and educator are impossible to measure but largely responsible for the home growing and concentrate revolution that has occurred over the last five decades. He is still consulting and advising cannabis companies, as well as providing photos and content for magazines and books. Follow him on Instagram @melfrank420

HIGH TIMES is proud to present our Dr. Lester Grinspoon Lifetime Achievement Award to James J. Goodwin, better known as Mel Frank.
